As Principal of Liscarroll NS, I welcome you to our school website. We hope it gives you an insight into the life of our school. Liscarroll NS is a rural co-educational with 5 Special classes . It is a welcoming, happy school, where we all work together for the benefit of the pupils who attend here. The well being and academic progress of every pupil is a priority.

As a staff, we strive to develop an open, positive relationship with both pupils and parents . We value and look after the needs of every child and aim to ensure that all of our pupils enjoy their time here. We recognise that learning is a lifelong process, and believe that the foundation we lay with children today, will help them to develop their talents to their full potential and to grow into confident caring members of the community . Mutual respect for each other and regard for each other’s viewpoints within our school community permeates the wide range of activities that are carried out within the school. We believe that a child learns best through participation and active learning in a supportive environment. This involves partnership with the parents of our school.

5th Class Junior Bake-Off Challenge

The aroma of freshly baked goods filled the air as our fantastic 5th class took on their very own Junior Bake-Off Challenge!

Our budding bakers embraced the challenge with incredible enthusiasm and creativity. We saw everything from meticulously decorated waffles, "brookies", chocolate brownie cake and even some mouthwatering sponge cakes. The focus wasn't just on taste (though that was certainly a bonus!), but also on presentation, technique, and teamwork.

It was wonderful to see the children applying their maths skills for measurements, reading comprehension for recipes, and problem-solving when things didn't quite go to plan. More importantly, they learned about teamwork, perseverance, patience, and the joy of creating something delicious from scratch.

A huge well done to all the participants for their amazing efforts and incredible bakes.

Monster Bingo Fundraiser

A big 'Thank You' to everyone who turned up to support our Monster Bingo fundraiser for the school on Wednesday 11th June. €10,000 profit was raised in total. This money will be spent on resurfacing part of the back yard to make it accessible in all weather for the pupils.

Also thanks to Freemount Community Council for allowing us to use their hall and to everyone to helped in anyway to make the night a success. The staff of the school played a blinder on the night and made sure the event was a tremendous success. All the school community really appreciated your help and participation.

Congratulations to Michael Sheehan from Kiskeam who won the jackpot of €1000 on the night. A total of €3000 was given out in prize money along with over 16 fabulous raffle prizes. Well done to all our winners

Past Pupil Success - Entrepreneur in the Making

We were delighted to welcome back William Brosnan, a past pupil, who returned to share his inspiring journey in STEM. He spoke to our 4th, 5th & 6th class students about Dementia Shield, an innovative app he developed to support individuals living with dementia. His project recently earned him the Boston Scientific Medical Devices Award for his project ‘Dementia Shield’ at the SciFest competition in MTU. William is in 2nd year in Scoil Mhuire, Kanturk and is only 14 years old. He is a great role model for our pupils. His visit really inspired the students and showed them what’s possible when you follow your ideas and passions. We are extremely proud of this talented and extremely humble past pupil and we wish him the best in his future endeavours.

Bobble Head Art

3rd class were very busy in art class during the past couple of weeks. They took part in the BLAST art residency and under the guidance of class teacher Mrs Browne and Marian Ward (artist in residence), they created beautiful and imaginative Bobble Heads.

There was a lot of work involved but they loved the whole process. There was great team work, perseverence and creativity on display during the process.

They took part in a fashion show wearing their creations at assembly this week. Well done to all involved.

Assemblies

Mrs Murphy organises 'Assemblies' in the halla on a fortnightly basis. We all say a prayer together, share important information with all the staff & pupils along with celebrating any achievements and awards. We also have a 'Class Spotlight'. This is where a different class each assembly performs a poem, song, drama piece or maybe shows off something they have done as a class.

It is a great opportunity to get everyone together and on the same page in our very busy school.

Liscarroll NS Sciath na Scol

B2 Camogie Champions

Liscarroll National School Camogie team won the Sciath na Scol B2 Camogie Final on Tuesday morning last in Carrigoon, Mallow beating Ballyhooly NS on a scoreline of 2-8 to 3-4. The girls made history as this was the first year our school has fielded a camogie team and to win was the icing on the cake.

There was great support from parents, grandparents and friends. Ballyhooly were very worthy opponents on the day. They played a blinder and our joint captains were presented with the cup. They returned to a guard of honour at the school and presentations of medals in the halla. A big thank you to our two SNAs, Claire Doherty and Katherine Hallihan for training the team. World Bee Day

World Bee Day is celebrated every year on May 20th to raise awareness about the importance of bees and other pollinators. As part of our Green Schools Initiative, we celebrated World Bee Day by exploring fun facts about bees and learning how these tiny creatures make a big difference in our world. This year, we were delighted to welcome Natasha Humphreys a local beekeeper to our school. She spoke to all the classes about how bees make honey and even brought along some of her beekeeping equipment for us to see. It was a fantastic opportunity to learn more about bees and how we can help protect them by planting flowers, avoiding harmful pesticides, and supporting local beekeepers.

Girls Soccer Champions

Huge congratulations to our Senior Girls from 5th & 6th classes on winning the Buttevant Soccer Club's Primary Inter School Blitz.

All our teams both boys and girls played their hearts out on the day but our girls ran out winners and were delighted to be presented with the winners plaque.

Water Safety talk
Students from 3rd to 6th class had the pleasure of receiving a water safety talk from Róisín O' Donovan from Cork Co Council recently.
This was a very informative talk and were very lucky to get this opportunity.
Thank you to Róisín for sharing all her knowledge and skills with us.

'Aladdin' Musical - A Huge Success!

There was a great buzz around the school for the past number of weeks as we prepared and rehearsed for Aladdin. We were delighted with the performances of our pupils from 2nd - 6th classes and our Senior Lios Cúram students on the nights of 'Aladdin Jnr' the musical. The pupils rehearsed for several weeks and were a credit to themselves, their families, teachers and SNAs. They never complained and they all loved being involved in the show. A huge word of gratitude to all the staff who supervised classes, organised and made costumes, painted the backdrop and signs, sorted props, choreographed dances, taught songs, directed the show, did make up, organised door tickets, the shop and raffle and turned up both nights to help out in any way they could. Also thanks to the parents and grandparents who did some sewing for us. Thanks to our caretakers who erected the stage and put up posters etc. Without this support and volunteerism, the show could not go ahead. Thanks so much to all the family members and friends that bought tickets and turned up on both nights to support our wonderful students.

The show was sold out both nights and the proceeds will go towards resurfacing a grass area at the end of the basket ball court to create a new play area for our pupils that is accessible all year round.

"It's a BIG Musical"

After a busy few weeks, the final touches are being put together and the final threads being sown on the costumes for our upcoming musical - Aladdin!

Students from 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th & Lios Cúram classes have been working extremely hard learning their lines, lyrics and dance routines.

There is lots of excitement(and singing) throughout the school as showtime draws near.

Both nights are now SOLD OUT!

Analog Devices Robotics Competition 2025

Congratulations to three of our 6th class boys who came 4th out of 40 schools at the Analog Robotics Competition Semi-Final recently which was held in Limerick Racecourse. The boys qualified for the final which was held on Saturday, 5th April in Analog headquarters in Limerick. The boys are no stranger to STEM and have taken part in STEM hour at school over the past few years with Mrs Mullane & Mrs Walsh. They worked extremely well as a team on the day of the final and persevered to present a well researched project. They were placed 5th on the day which was a tremendous achievement for the school's first outing at this competition. The school is very proud of them and wish them the very best of luck in the final. Thanks to Mrs Walsh and Mrs Keane who have prepared them well for this competition. Animation Workshop with Julie Forester as part of Creative Cluster

We were delighted to welcome the talented Julie Forrester to our school as part of the Creative Cluster Initiative, to do an animation workshop with 4th class. She tutored the pupils on how animation movies are made and she guided them to create their own animations. They worked in teams and firstly created a story board. Then came the artistic part of the process where they had to design and create all aspects of their set including props and characters. Finally, they brought the animation to life using digital technology. They did a wonderful job and their class teacher, Miss Griffin along with Julie were extremely proud of their creations. An enormous amount of learning, co-operation, perseverance and creativity was visible during this process. Well done to all involved.

U12 Hurling Team Heading for Páirc Uí Chaoímh

There is great excitement in school this week as Liscarroll/Churchtown Gaels U12 hurling team will get the opportunity to play in Páirc Uí Chaoímh at half time of the Cork V Galway Hurling League game this Saturday.
Best of luck to all the boys and we hope you all enjoy the experience.

Students and staff in Lios Cúram enjoyed a St. Patrick's Day Parade during our Lá Glas.

We celebrated Irish culture in a way that makes sure everyone feels welcome and can join in the fun. There was lots of green, music, and smiles during our very own parade!

World Book Day 2025

Last Friday, 7th of March we had a wonderful day celebrating World Book Day.
Our students and staff dressed as their favourite book character.

We also held a book swap and each student got to take home a new book of their choice.

Cork City Sports Qualifying Heats

All classes from 1st - 6th made their way to the local GAA field to participate in the run offs for Cork City Sports whcih will take place at the end of May in CIT.

We had some very competitive races on the day.

We wish all our students the best as they represent our school in Cork on the day.

Shrove Tuesday

Pancakes galore on Pancake Tuesday. Mrs Vaughan & Mrs Mullane cooked pancakes for all pupils in the school. Each class sat together in the hall and members of the Student Council served them up pancakes with toppings. There were lots of happy faces as the pupils enjoyed the pancakes. YUMMY!

We recently held Friendship Week in our school as part of our 'Bí Cineálta' programme. Our Student Council voted on and chose the tiemtable of events for the week. It was a huge success and fostered postive relationships amopng staff and pupils.

Procedural Writing in 5th Class

In 5th class we have been focusing on the genre of Procedural Writing in English this term.

This week we followed our procedural writing recipe to bake our own cookies.
We worked in groups and the end result was....deeelicious!

Minister Michael Moynihan TD visits Liscarroll NS

On Friday 14th February, Minister Michael Moynihan, Junior Minister with responsibility for Special Education and Disability visited our school. Derval Vaughan principal welcomed him as did members of our Student Council, all the pupils and staff in the school. Many local politicians, councillors and community representatives also attended.

Minister Moynihan spoke very highly of the school and then went on a tour of the school with the principal and chairperson of the Board of Mannagement, Tim Brosnan. He had particular interest in our special classes for children with autism. He enjoyed a chat and a cup of tea with all present.

Grandparents Day 2025

We were delighted to welcome all our grandparents to the school today. We treasure our grandparents and were delighted so many could join us. It was the biggest gathering to date.

Our day started with a warm welcome from our principal Mrs Vaughan. A prayer service led by Fr Leader followed. Pupils from every class read prayers and poems about what their grandparents mean to them. They also sang some hymns led by Ms O'Riordan and Nora.

Fr Leader blessed the throats of our grandparents and pupils.

The Paparazzi were busy taking photos of our wonderful grandparents and here are some of the ones they captured on the day.

Our grandparents then enjoyed a well earned cup of tea and a chat with their many friends and neighbours. Everyone enjoyed the day immensely.

Thanks to all the staff of the school for providing the refreshments for the day.

Chess Tournament

Some of our 5th & 6th class pupils recently attended a chess tournament in Mallow. These pupils love playing chess at school and are tutored by teacher Lisa Keane. As you will see from the photos, our pupils are in deep concentration deciding on their next move.

They competed very well on the day and loved their chess outing to Mallow.

This competition was organised by 'Ficheall'.

Budding Engineers

We are delighted that our school has secured a place in the Analog Devices primary schools robotics competition. As part of this competition Analog Devices sponsored the full cost of ‘WeDo 2.0’ LEGO Education workshop, provided by Learnit [www.learnit.ie].

This was a 90-minute workshop which introduced the students from sixth class to the exciting world of robotics. On the day the workshop facilitators selected a team to represent our school in the semi-final of the robotics competition which is to be held in Analog Devices, Raheen, Limerick on the 20th March.

The team chosen were three boys from 6th class who designed, constructed and programmed a robotic hand. This team of boys showed high levels of co-operation, teamwork & creativity which helped them greatly to secure a place in the competition. We wish the lads the very best of luck in this competition in Analogue Devices, Raheen, Limerick on the 20th March, 2025.

Animation Workshop

As part of our Creative Cluster, we are currently running an animation workshop with 4th class. This is being led by Julie Forrester. The pupils are creating a story board. From that they create characters and finally they will bring their characters and stories to life in a short animation movie.

The pupils are enjoying these workshops immensely and have learned so much in the past couple of sessions. They have had to work in a team, collaborate on thier story and produce a movie together at the end. They will have 4 workshops in all to complete their animated movies. This is a wonderful project which is funded by the Creative Cluster Grant. More updates to follow and we will post up the movies when they are finished..

Braincalm Training

Brenda Cassidy from the Braincalm Institute, recently trained up all of our SNAs on Braincalm.

What is Braincalm?

Braincalm is a set of daily specific physical exercises that calm & regulate the brain

Ways to help the child in school & accommodations to make the day easier for the child

It helps to regulate the child

Usually one of the SNAs does it with the child.

The SNA leads the child through a number of exercises. First alerting exercises such as running, jumping, balancing & rolling followed by calming activities such as lying with a blanket over them while the SNA rolls an exercise ball along their back.

It takes about 10-15 minutes.

All the pupils accessing braincalm at present in our school enjoy it and are benefitting from it.

In fact, some children ask to do it with the SNA when they need to be regulated

It works for children of all ages in our school.

Drumming Workshop with Patrick Naughton

All classes got an opportunity to take part in the Drumming Workshop with Patrick Naughton. The pupils loved this and the staff said it was a very inclusive activity. This is Patrick's second year doing the workshop with us and we were delighted to welcome him back.

This workshop is funded by the Creative Cluster Initiative which Liscarroll NS is part of in conjunction with Kilbin and Ballyhass national schools.

Cork Handballers

Congratulations to these 5th & 6th class girls who have made it onto the Cork Girls Under 12 & Under 13 handball teams. The school is extremely proud of them and wish them every success while playing for their county.

Santa Visits Liscarroll NS

Santa took time out of his busy schedule to visit the school. His elves decorated a grotto for him. Every class in the school including the playschool children next door. They all told Santa how good they were and he was delighted. Every pupil got a selection box. They were thrilled.

Christmas Pageant

'The Magical Christmas Jigsaw'

Juniors, Seniors, 1st, 2nd class and Lios Cúram pupils performed in the school pageant 'The Magical Christmas Jigsaw' in St Joseph's church, Liscarroll. They had been practising for several weeks and on the night they were fantastic. The church was packed to capacity with very proud family members. Well done to all the staff who taught and directed this performance. It was a joy to watch.

Christmas Hampers

Shoe Boxes for Moldova

A huge thank you to the pupils, parents and staff of the school for all their contributions towards Christmas hampers for the local branch of St Vincent de Paul and shoe boxes for Moldova. The pupils and staff were delighted to be part of these charitable donations. After all it's the season of giving.

Members of the local branch of St Vincent de Paul (which covers Buttevant, Liscarroll, Lisgriffin & Churchtown) were delighted to accept a total of 17 hampers and said they already had the hampers ear marked for families in the area. They were overwhelmed with the generosity of the school community. They also offered us support in the school if we needed it for any family.

We recently opened our Nuture Room. Derval Vaughan(Principal) & Mag Mullane (Deputy Principal) are Nurture Room trained and taking children in the morning that need that settling in time. It is a calm, warm and welcoming space. It has been very beneficial to the children that are using it. Have a look at the video. It has had over 6.3K views on facebook

In November we remember

We had a prayer service in school today to remember family members and friends that have passed away. All pupils and staff members attended and some read prayers. We also sang some lovely hymns led by Christine & Nora O'Riordan.

S.T.E.M.

Third, Fourth, Fifth & Sixth classes are taking part in a dedicated S.T.E.M. hour on Thursday and Friday evenings in November.

Our theme for the month is : SPORT

Science Station: Create a foosball table

Technology Station: Designing a new jersey and showcasing it using Green Screen

Engineering Station: Lego Wedo & Lego Spike programming projects

Maths Station: Problem Solving focusing on teamwork, encouraging playfulness, using cognitively challenging tasks, promoting maths talk and using concrete materials to help develop strategic competence.

The Gaels - North Cork Junior 'A'

Football Champions 2024

Massive congratulations to the Gaels on their Junior 'A' Football North Cork victory over Charleville recently. It is the first time since 1934 that the parish has celebrated such a win. The Gaels is made up of players from the parish of Liscarroll & Churchtown. Many of the men pictured here were pupils of Liscarroll NS. Some have even gone on to become teachers and have taught in the school. We are very fortunate to have captain, Padhraic O'Shea coming to the school as a GAA coach presently.

We were delighted when many of the team visited the school the day after the final and brought the cup with them. They entered the school to a rapturous round of applause and loud cheers. We are all very proud of their massive achievement and wish them well in the county. Gaels Abú!!

PE - Gymnastics

We are delighted to welcome Megan from School Fitness Ireland to lead our gymnastics classes for the month of November. Every class will get four sessions with Megan. She is an accomplished gymnast and tutor. Pupils and staff alike are picking up some great tips regarding basic movement, balance and the proper techniques.

The pupils are loving this strand of the PE curriculum and we are very fortunate to have a big hall and the gym mats that our Parents Association bought for us last year.

Maureen Finn Retires from Liscarroll NS

Liscarroll NS gathered recently in Liscarroll Nationbal School to celebrate Maureen Finn’s remarkable journey, a journey that spanned 24 incredible years of teaching, mentoring, and inspiring countless young minds and looking after pupils and staff in Liscarroll NS . As the school community bade farewell to Maureen they reflected on the huge impact she has made in our school and beyond.

Maureen has been more than just a teacher; she has been a source of inspiration, and a caring mentor to all who have had the privilege to learn from her .

Over the years, Maureen has touched the lives of so many, fostering not just academic growth but also the personal development of pupils . Her door has always been open, and her heart even more so. Whether it was staying late to prepare work for pupils, organizing Bun Friday, making hampers, selling raffle tickets or simply lending an ear to staff or pupils, Maureen has proven time and time again what it means to be a dedicated teacher.

As Liscarroll NS celebrated her retirement, they not only reflected on the incredible memories but also on the legacy that Maureen has left behind. The lessons learned, the support , the encouragement and advice given, and the positive impact Maureen has had on pupils' lives which will resonate for years to come.

Maureen has also been a fabulous colleague to all the staff who have worked In Liscarroll. No job was ever too big or difficult for her and she will be greatly missed by the staff.

Sciath na Scol Girls Football Final 2024

Our girls played Kilavullen in the Sciath na Scol Girls Football Final. It was a tremendously hard fought contest with both teams giving it their all. There was evidence of great skill and determination on display by our girls and they had a 'Never give up', attitude right up until the final whistle. Unfortunately, our girls were runners up on the day. A big 'Thank you' to Miss Ducey, Catherine Gammel and Claire Doherty for training the girls and thanks to Tadhg Egan for helping out on the day. Also thanks to the parents for driving and to all our supporters on the day. It was great to see such a big crowd at the match.

Good Luck Girls

Best of luck to our school girls Football team in the Sciath na Scol Final on 22nd October in Carrigoon, Mallow. They will take on the girls from Kilavullen NS. A tight contest is expected but whatever the result, we know that our girls will do themselves and our school proud.

New Sensory Path

The pupils were delighted with our new sensory path in the corridor. It is such a big hit that the Student Council asked if there could be another one for the other corridor. We intend to do this shortly.

World Teacher Day

We were delighted to celebrate 'World Teacher Day' on the 5th Ocotber. The theme for this year's World Teacher Day is: 'Valuing teacher voices'. We'd like to thank our teachers who work tirelessly and go over and above to ensure that all the pupils in Liscarroll NS get the best education possible. Also thanks to the SNAs who brought in goodies for the staffroom to mark the day. Pictured here are some of our wonderful teaching staff.

World Heart Day

Liscarroll National School celebrated World Heart Day on 29th September. The pupils and staff wore red to mark the day. WHD was created to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease and make strides to reduce it around the world. Healthy eating and keeping active are great ways to maintain a healthy heart. The pupils and staff of our school embrace these two initiatives by having healthy lunches and regularly exercising, as we are an Active School. Click on the photo carousel to see more pictures.

SNA Appreciation Day

We were delighted to celebrate the first SNA Appreciation Day in Liscarroll NS. The SNAs in our school play a very important role in supporting the pupils in our school and are at the heart of our school. On Spetember 26th, we were delighted to celebrate the vital role these people play in our school. All the teaching staff brought in lovely baking and treats for the SNAs to have with their tea. The principal organised that the staff room had a celebratory atomosphere. Our SNAs well deserved this treat. Thanks to you all for the great work you do on a daily basis.

School Fundraiser was a Huge Success

Well done to everyone from Liscarroll, it's surrounding areas and the general public who came to Charleville Showgrounds to support Liscarroll NS Annual Auto Jumble Fundraiser. A sincere thanks to Seán Bradley, and his crew of volunteers including Tom Griffin, for co-ordinating the event. They put in a tremendous effort and it paid off. Thanks to all the staff and the Parents Association for all their hard work on the day and leading up to the event. A big 'Thank You' to all our sponsors and to Charleville Showground Committee for allowing us to use the premises. Finally, thanks to all the exhibitors and trade stalls for setting up on the day.

We were delighted with the amount of dogs that turned up for our dog show on the day. They were well turned out and on their best behaviour. Judges Shane Roche, Collette Sexton and Louise O'Sullivan, had some very tough decisions to make. We were also delighted to welcome Tik Tok star, Eoin 'Mad for Slurry'Lynch, fresh from the Ploughing and The Late Late Show at the weekend.

The day was a tremendous success with just over €5,000 raised for the school.

Cycle Right Programme

5th class are currently taking part in the Safer Cycling programme in conjunction with Cork County Council and Cork Sports Partnership.

Liscarroll NS Autojumble and Dog Show Fundraiser

Liscarroll N.S. will host their annual monster Autojumble and Dog Show on Sunday 22nd 2024 at Charleville Showgrounds, Ballyhea @ 9am. There will be a large display of vintage cars, trucks and tractors as well as a Monster Vintage Autojumble. There will be a plaque for each exhibitor at the show.

The popular and eagerly awaited Dog Show will commence at 11am. There will be several categories. These include:

Waggiest Tail, Cutest Puppy, Golden Oldie, Lovelist Lady and many more. Entry €2 per category

There will be numerous retail stalls, food outlets, novelty games, face painting, raffle and a cake sale. Country music and DJ from 11am.

Please bring cash as there won't be card facilities on site.

We encourage everyone to support this.

National Hedgerow Week

Shaizia came to our school today from the National heritage council to celebrate National Hedgerow week.

She worked with the classes from 2nd to 6th and the children in Lios Cúram. She explained to the classes about biodiversity and about the hedgerows around Ireland.

Firstly, we split into groups and tried to identify some leaves that she had brought in that were native to Ireland.

We then discussed plants and animals that were native to the local area of Liscarroll.

We explored the hedgerows in our school and we took part in a hunt to try and find as many leaves and plants that we could that were on her list.

Shazia was very knowledgeable and gave us an opportunity to ask loads of questions and have very interesting discussions.

It was a very interesting visit and a great way to celebrate National Hedgerow Week!

Liscarroll NS Annual Fundraiser

Save the Date:

22nd September 2024

The school will hold it's annual fundraiser in Charleville Showgrounds on Sunday, 22nd September 2024, from 11am - 2.30pm. There will be a monster autojumble, dog show, face painting, novelty games, truck & vintage cars on display, cake sale, and a raffle.

As this is the school's major fundraiser for the year, we ask everyone to come out and support on the day.

Admission €5 , Kids free. Please bring cash as there won't be facilities for card machines.

Year 2024/2025

We would like to welcome everyone back to school especially our new students, staff and parents.

We hope you all have a good 2024/25 school year with us.

We have lots of activities planned for this year.

Wellbeing

Our school has a strong and consistent focus on the wellbeing of all pupils. The social and emotional needs of all pupils is a priority in Liscarroll NS : happy children, happy school.

Our school adopts various strategies and initiatives to support wellbeing including: the Amber Flag, a robust SPHE plan, student council and social groups.
