Lios Cúram

Welcome to Lios Cúram.

This is the part of our school reserved for our autism classes.

We currently have five special classes for pupils with ASD in Lios Cúram

Our Early Intervention class accommodates 3-5 year old children.

Our two Junior classes are  for 5-7 year old children.

Our Middle class has pupils with from 7-10 years old.

Our Senior class pupils are between 10 and 12 years old.

ASD Early Intervention Class – Age 3 to 5 years

All children attending  a class in Lios Cúram must have a diagnosis of ASD and a recommendation to attend a mainstream school with a special class attached.

Each autism class is staffed with one class teacher and two special needs assistants.

Each child is encouraged to access the curriculum at a pace that is relevant to them. Together with their parents, each class teacher will provide an individualised education programme for each child. This programme is delivered on a 1:1 and small group basis by the teacher in their autism classroom. Their educational programme is then supplemented by means of inclusion in the mainstream classroom most relevant to the child’s age.

Here at Liscarroll NS, we are fortunate enough to have access to some wonderful resources for our autism classes.

We have a specialised OT (occupational therapy) room where the children in the school are encouraged to work on individual OT programmes to enhance their gross motor skills.

We also have a wonderful sensory room to provide a safe and calm space for the children in the school.

A more recent addition of a sensory garden provides a further outlet for our children to grow and develop their play skills, fine gross motor skills through sensory activities, all while outdoors.

Our children in this area are all associated with The Cork North Disabilities Services Team at St Joseph’s foundation in Charleville, Co. Cork. The team provide us with two very important outlets for our children. Throughout the school year, the children are given access to the hydrotherapy pool for swimming as a class group. Our children are also fortunate enough to have access to the Liskennett Equine Therapy centre in Co. Limerick as a class group. These outlets are so important for the children in our autism classes and we are happy to facilitate their engagement in them.

Through ongoing staff training and CPD, the staff in Lios Cúram are confident in providing the care and attention that each child in the autism classes need. We use a multi-sensory approach to teaching and learning. We take advice and guidance from the relevant outside agencies and professionals such as occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, educational psychologists etc, in order to provide the best care and education for our children.

Every child deserves a champion - an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection and insists they become the best that they can possibly be.’
